I just read a piece editorial written by a doctor, in which he explains why he considers it better for people with depression be forced to work rather than the right to go on disability. The essence of his argument was that when he was a junior doctor he lived next to a few young men who were on disability for depression, although still they were able to get out in the yard and play football. The more, I read his article, it became clear to me that it was, in fact, jealous because he was working hard learning to become a doctor so that he could treat these people who appeared to live an easy life, drawing a check from the Government, even if they were not really weakened enough, according to him, should be disabled.
Reading this article, it dawned on me that depression does not get the respect as it should because it's an invisible disease. There is nothing obviously wrong with people who are depressed. They plaster on a fake smile, make an appearance at work all day and everything seems to be normal. But the fact that depressed people are physically able to get themselves to work means that they are too disabled to work? I think that only a person who has experienced depression knows the true answer to this question.
I belong to the lucky ones who was able to recover from the depression with treatment. But, if I had been resistant to treatment, ranging from one drug to another with no relief, make the way so many people? I remember drag myself to work almost every day, pulling me out of bed at the last possible second because my sleep was so poor. I would be there in body, but at the height of the task emotionally, not really psychologically or physically. I made several mistakes, my productivity was low, and all around I was just not a good employee when I was depressed. Whenever I could, I used the days of illness and holidays to relieve unbearable stress. I can well imagine what it is like for the chronically depressed person who is not able to find relief by any means. How can you make a work able to work when you can barely find the energy to get the bed? If you are a job because of your depression and there's no end in sight for your symptoms, why you should not be considered invalid?
